Basic Dimension of Human Condition in Existential Therapy


To expand our awareness is to increase our capacity to live fully. The greater our awareness, the greater our possibilities for freedom. Awareness is realizing that we are subject to loneliness, meaningless, emptiness, guilt, and isolation. But, we have the potential, the choice, to act or not to act. (Existential Therapy: Propositon 1)

Jadi, yuk mari…beramai-ramai sadar diri. “Saya ini siapa, apa tujuan saya hidup di dunia, apa yang sudah saya lakukan, bagaimana perilaku saya, bla..bla..bla…”

Because we are basically free beings, we must accept responsibility that accompanies our freedom. We are free to choose among alternatives. We have a role in shaping our destinies. (Existential Therapy:Proposition 2)

Jadi, yuk menjadi manusia bertanggung jawab. Minimal pd diri sendiri, dg berani menerima konsekuensi dr tiap keputusan dan pilihan yg sdh diambil.

Experience of aloneness. We must learn to enjoy being alone before we can enjoy being with others. We are ultimately alone, yet related. The experience of relatedness will improve once you’re comfortable with yourself. (Existential Therapy :Proposition 3)

Jadi, kalau orang lain tdk nyaman bersama kita, maka cobalah untuk berkaca: “Apakah saya nyaman dg diri saya sendiri? Ataukah selama ini saya hanya berpura-pura tidak tahu apa yg salah?”

Searching for meaning. Meaning -like pleasure- must be pursued obliquely. Finding meaning in life is a by-product of a commitment to creating, loving, and working. Meaningless in life leads to emptiness and hollowness. (Existential therapy:proposition 4)

Jadi, kalau merasa “suwung”, kesepian, linglung, bingung sampai ga tau musti ngapain, sampai ga peduli udah nyakitin orang lain..maka perlu mikir, “hidup saya selama ini, apa sih artinya?”

Anxiety is a part of human condition. Life can’t be lived nor can death be faced, without anxiety. If we have the courage to face ourselves and life we maybe frightened, we will be able to change. Opening up to new life means opening up to new anxieties. (Existential therapy: Proposition 5)

Jadi, sebenarnya apa sih yang kita cemaskan? Setiap perubahan dalam hidup akan menimbulkan perasaan cemas, namun apakah lantas kita menghindari hidup?

Awareness of death and nonbeing. Death is also a basic human condition, and awareness of it gives significance to living. We have limited time to complete our projects. So, each moment is crucial! (Exixtential therapy: proposition 6)

Jadi, ternyata penting juga ya untuk mengingat MATI? Karena dengan begitu, kita akan lebih menghargai hidup dan setiap kesempatan yang kita miliki untuk bertumbuh. Selagi ada kesempatan, mengapa tidak meminta maaf? Mengapa tidak memaafkan? Mengapa tidak memberdayakan diri menjadi individu yang lebih baik dari kemarin???
