Smile was the theme music for Charlie Chaplin‘s final silent picture Modern Times in 1936. In 1954, John Turner and Geoffrey Parsons added lyrics to Charlie Chaplin’s music, and it become a popular hit when Nat ‘King’ Cole recorded it. Robert Downey Jr. also sings this on the “Chaplin” movie soundtrack.

Smile though your heart is aching
Smile… even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you’ll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll see the sun come shining through for you

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying?
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile…

<instrumental interlude>
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what’s the use of crying?
You’ll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile…

I’ve heard Susan Wong sang the new version of this song for many-many-many times since I got the mp3 files of Susan’s album from a friend of mine a year a go… and still, it’s an owesome song!

We all do the “pretending” things.. we pretend if everything is okay, but the fact it isn’t. We pretend to smile, while in the heart we speak sadness and despair.. We pretend to love, even though we are in anger and hesitation.. we are pretending to be someone else just to please others, to fulfill their expectations of what we are.. It’s a life of fake!

Personal integrity is a big matter. We don’t fight for other, we fight for our self. We are alone, naturally… we was born alone and will die alone too…

“Alone” shouldn’t always be defined as sadness, because sometimes we find happyness when we are alone..in time we are just being our self without any judgment or label. It makes us saver. We don’t have to show the faking face..

This song –Smile– gives me hope of tomorrow, a bunch of flowers of dreams to be fulfilled during my journey, and a strength to move on..
I don’t want to be smiling outside while aching inside… I want to show the real me, without any sophisticated mask to cover in.

But I know, “smiling while is aching” can lead us to the true joy, in a positive way. Smile can be a bridge to reach happyness, by giving our self hope that everything will be just alright and fits in time.

*I’ll send this song for my best friend, Nawri, whom her mom passed away last night
